UPDATE: Police arrest man for arson, say he lit fire to house occupied by son

ELKHART, Ind. (WNDU) – A man has been arrested for arson after police say he set fire to his Elkhart home that was also occupied by his adult son.

Crews were called to the 1800 block of Belmont Avenue shortly before 2:15 p.m., Elkhart Police Lt. Travis Snider confirmed in a phone interview.

Manuel Buitendorp, 58, was arrested at the scene. His adult son was able to escape the fire.

Buitendorp was transported to the hospital to be checked out. He was released from the hospital but remains in police custody.

Police continue to investigate the incident, including Buitendorp's motive for allegedly lighting the fire.

No firefighters were hurt while trying to get the flames under control. Officials on the scene did not comment on the origin of the fire.
