The St. Joseph County Police Department is currently investigating a fatal accident involving a train and a pedestrian.

It happened off of Walnut Rd. south of US 20.

Investigators are currently interviewing witnesses to the accident.

The initial investigation appears that the individual accidentally stepped into the train's path and could have been distracted by a phone or paperwork. Nearby workers tried to yell at the person to move because he was too close to the track, but he was distracted.

The victim is a white man in his 30s and was a contractor for Gavilon.

"It's very, very tragic for the family, for his co-workers," deputy coroner Wendi Scoles said. "They had just spoken to him moments before and they are all taking it pretty hard."

Norfolk Southern Railway is also currently investigating.
