New Carlisle residents could soon be getting on the grid.
The St Joseph's County Board Of Commissioners authorized a grant application Tuesday for a metronet extension.
Federal funding could be secured later this summer and residents could see increased broadband by the end of this year.
The county believes the 24 miles of fiber optic conduit are as critical to the town as utilities, such as water, and good roads.
"Rural broadband is something that really is a premium and so that this project extending 24 miles of conduit that would be redundant is a huge opportunity not only for the business community that's out there but the business community. We're trying to draw as well as the schools, the libraries, the government and all of those agencies," St. Joe County Economic Development Executive Director Bill Schalliol said.
Now, New Carlisle officials want to hear your voice on this issue.
There will be a public meeting Thursday from 6-8 pm at the New Carlisle Public Library.
