SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - South Bend Washington picked a windy Thursday night to play their first varsity baseball game since 2019.

The Panthers were able to get enough interest to sports a team this season, as they look for the program’s first win since 2017. Tonight wasn’t their night, falling to South Bend Riley, 13-3 in five innings, but it’s a start they can take some positives from. Especially being such a young team.

“Super exciting”, said head coach Buster Hammond. “Very very happy with what happened tonight. We competed and that’s all I ever ask of my kids. Their effort was stellar to me. They didn’t give up. They didn’t quit. And we did put the ball in play and we were super aggressive on the base paths.”

“Amazing”, added freshman shortstop, Gabe Weber. “First game in three years. Came out here and scored some runs. That’s always good. It wasn’t the best outcome we could’ve got, but a game’s a game. Finally got to play.”
