SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - There were several special moments from the special weekend the Notre Dame baseball program has not experienced in 19 seasons - winning a regional for the first time since 2002.

However, there was one moment that did not happen during any of the game action that really stands out.

Notre Dame recorded the final out of the weekend to clinch the regional title against Central Michigan on a SportsCenter Top 10 worthy play made by Jack Brannigan at third.

Irish captain Niko Kavadas caught that throw by Brannigan to seal the deal, but Kavadas decided to hand the ball that was the last out to Irish manager Link Jarrett during the celebration.

It was something Kavadas planned to do and wanted to make sure Jarrett knows how much this team appreciates him.

“He deserves it,” Kavadas said. “He was the turning point in this program. He’s done such an unbelievable job getting us to where we are today and I think that he is going to win many more regionals on this field so I hope that first ball means something to him.”

The ball meant a lot to Jarrett, he put it in his back pocket as soon as Kavadas handed it to him.

“I took it as, we did it,” Jarrett said. “That ball to me meant that like everything we had really forced them into doing, that ball to me meant we got it. We did it. Check. Here’s the ball. That’s how I took it.”

The Irish will take their talents down to Starkville for a Super Regional match up with Mississippi State this weekend.

The schedule for the weekend was released on Tuesday.

The first game of the series will be on Saturday at 2 PM on ESPN.

Game 2 is Sunday at 6 PM on either ESPN2 or ESPNU. If Game 3 is needed, it will take place at 7 PM on Monday on ESPN2 or ESPNU.
