LEXINGTON, Ky. (WNDU) - Bremen’s own Erin Coffel has been tearing it up for the Wildcats this season.

Coffel is a finalist for NFCA/Schutt Sports National Freshman of the Year and has been named to the All-SEC Freshman team and the overall second team.

Coffel set Kentucky’s freshman record with 16 home runs and 52 RBI’s.

Having missed out on the postseason last year with Bremen, Coffel is ready to go.

“Just honestly getting the opportunity to play here has been the biggest blessing,” Coffel said. “Getting to have all of the successes and all of the failures, it’s been all like a big learning process for me. This is the main reason like this is the biggest reason why because Kentucky always has a shot of making it and especially hosting this year. I’m just so excited. I think the whole team is excited. Especially the buildup to all of this with the selection show we were like on the bubble. So to see our name pop up as number 14 and get to host, it’s so exciting.”

Coffel and Kentucky get start their run in the Lexington regional Friday at noon on ESPN 2.

It’s a double elimination regional so the Irish could be meeting up with Coffel at some point.
