BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. (WNDU) - A fire destroyed a Berrien County barn and killed multiple animals Thursday morning.

Officials say the call came in just before 5:30 a.m. for the fire on Browntown Road in Chikaming Township.

When crews arrived on scene, the barn was engulfed in flames.

Crews were able to save two horses, two goats and some chickens, but four llamas, including three babies, a peacock and a few chickens died in the fire.

“By the time we were able to do anything, it was so totally involved there was absolutely no way that anybody could go inside to try to get the other animals out,” said Chief Mike Davidson of the Chikaming Township Fire Department. “It had too much of a head start on us.”

Crews used heavy equipment to help fight the fire.

The cause is under investigation, but no foul play is suspected.
