Ind. (WNDU) - Some people in Greene Township feel the grass is “greener” in the John Glenn School Corporation.

The Indiana house last night apparently agreed.

Lawmakers passed a bill that could eventually allow Greene Township residents to pull out of the South Bend School Corporation and be annexed by John Glenn.

Two years ago, South Bend closed the only school it operated in Greene Township.

About three quarters of the school-age children in the township attend schools outside of the South Bend district.

Under the terms of the bill, the switch would be subject to approval from the Indiana State Board of Education and require a petition drive to gain the signatures of 51 percent of the townships registered voters.

The house vote was 52 in favor, 43 against. The bill now moves on to the state senate for further consideration.
