St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit identify woman found on South Bend street
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit has identified the woman found dead on Riverside Place early Wednesday morning as Denise Garcia, 31.
16 News Now brings you the latest information on the investigation.
Neighbors told 16 News Now they didn’t hear anything until emergency vehicles arrived on scene.
Folks around here were left with a lot of questions and no answers Wednesday afternoon.
South Bend Police responded to the intersection of Riverside Dr. and Riverside Pl. after receiving a call about a woman’s body on the street just after 4:15 A.M.
Nearby residents woke to emergency vehicles making way for each other in the narrow cul-de-sac just yards away from Keller Park.
“We usually don’t see anything here except maybe somebody arguing in the park once in a while or hearing somebody squealing out in the park,” said nearby resident Robert Bunker.
“Well this is a very quiet area right here. We love living here. We’ve been here about 22 years, so. Usually it’s somebody falling into the river or something but nothing like this,” said nearby resident Greg Ditsch.
Neighbors say they didn’t recognize the woman, and didn’t know why she was in the street.
Metro Homicide described her being from Hispanic or Indian descent and in her late 20′s or 30′s.
They also said she was partially clothed.
“That’s really strange because why would you be walking around there first of all. We have no idea who this person is. Just knew it was a female,” Ditsch said.
“Pretty scary. The tape was across the road. I kind of noticed that and then I realized it was a problem. Something was going on,” Bunker said.
If you have any information about the what happened, please reach out to Michiana Crime Stoppers or the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit.
Garcia’s autopsy is scheduled for Friday Nov. 27 in Fort Wayne.
We’ll be bringing you updates on air and online as they happen.
