Freshman cornerback Clarence Lewis becoming favorite for coaching staff
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - Brian Kelly said before the 2020 season that a lot of freshman would see the field.
Freshmen running back Chris Tyree and tight end Michael Mayer have quickly become fan favorites in just their first year on campus, but true freshman cornerback Clarence Lewis is becoming a favorite for the Irish coaching staff.
Lewis is listed on the depth chart to start ahead of cornerback TaRiq Bracy against North Carolina on Friday.
Brian Kelly says the battle between these two for the starting job has gone back and forth. The coaching staff likes what Bracy brings to the table, but Kelly says Lewis has done more from an overall standpoint to win the job.
“I don’t think that it’s been where it’s been 1-2 as much as it’s been 1A and 1B,” Kelly said. “[Lewis]has done a really nice job when he’s been out there and so we continue to go in that direction.”
Lewis will make his third start of the season on Friday against North Carolina. That will be a 3:30 PM kick on ABC.
