ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. (WNDU) - Authorities confirm that one person died from today’s crash on the Indiana Toll Road.

The victim is identified as 17-year-old Lukas Strain, of Stevensville, Michigan.

Lukas was sitting in the back of the vehicle while his parents were in the front.

The two were airlifted to a hospital and are in stable but guarded condition.

According to authorities, first responders were attending to another crash on the Toll Road that took place earlier before the deadly crash, on the eastbound lane of the Toll Road, five miles east of Elkhart.

As traffic was pushing back, a gray Subaru ended up rear-ending a tanker truck.

Sergeant Ted Bohner says this is the kind of thing authorities worry about when attending crashes.

“One of our biggest fears when we’re working out here on a heavy traveled roads, such as interstates and U.S. Highways, are those secondary crashes because it just takes a blink of an eye for something bad to happen. Because traffic can stop from going highway speeds to nearly 70 miles per hour or more to almost stop or stopped,” said Indiana State Police Sgt. Ted Bohner.
