Cassopolis man catches thief robbing his wife’s grave on camera
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - Caught on camera...after a series of items went missing from a gravesite at Prospect Hill Cemetery in Cassopolis, a man took it upon himself to find out what was going on.
16 News Now tells us why he's taking matters into his own hands.
Cass County, Michigan resident Edward Jones says he's gone to great lengths to catch the grave robber who's been taking items from his wife's final resting place. He says it's not about the $15 birdfeeders that keep going missing, but bring the person to justice who's desecrated his wife's grave.
"He's a thief and he'll continue to be a thief because he can. The only way to stop a thief is to catch him," Jones said.
These are the photos captured by Jones' hidden trail cameras when a man he doesn't know approaches his wife's grave. Here's the same man inspecting the hummingbird feeder. In the next frame, the man and the birdfeeder are gone.
"You should be able to come to a cemetery and know that your loved one can rest--that she can relax--and that's not the case right now," Jones said.
Jones says his wife Maria was well known and loved in their community before cancer took her life in 2017.
He says the person stealing from her grave isn't just taking items, but Jones' piece of mind.
"My wife's legacy has been disrupted because of someone coming up and stealing and she had no way to defend herself from that theft," he says.
Jones set up six hidden cameras to find the thief.
"He needs to be found out, he needs to be embarrassed, he needs to have a scarlet letter put on his chest so that other people know who he is," Jones says.
As luck would have it, the Cass County Sheriff's Department found the man Jones captured on film in possession of the bird feeder, earlier this afternoon.
Jones says he plans on pressing charges.
