Weather radios can alert your family to severe weather

We're getting into the heart of severe weather season and preparedness is the key.

There is one tool every home should have and it could save your life: a weather radio.

2010 was a violent weather year in Michiana. In fact, in 2010, the National Weather Service Office in Northern Indiana recorded the most tornadoes in a calendar year for its warning area, with 15 of those occurring in our viewing area.

There were also several events of straight line winds causing widespread damage.

We may be finding ourselves in a similar situation this year.

“We think it could be an active severe weather season once we warm up,” says Sam Lashley with the National Weather Service. “We get the moisture up here, it’s an active la Nina spring we’ve seen a lot of storm systems already. And that all creates the conditions favorable for big severe weather outbreaks.”

There is already evidence of that in the south, where the tornado outbreak a month ago is now officially the largest ever. In fact, there were actually two outbreaks last month, both topping the previous record from the super outbreak in 1974.

So now that we are heading into the warmer months, when severe weather is more likely, it’s important to have a weather radio on hand.

The NOAA weather radios will alert you immediately when a watch or warning is issued. This is especially important when storms roll through at night when you might be sleeping. Just like a smoke detector will warn you of a dangerous fire, these devices will warn you of dangerous weather or other civil emergencies.

WNDU and Martin’s Super Markets are hosting programming days to help make sure your weather radio, whether new or old, is programmed correctly. Those are going on Saturday until noon at the Martin’s location in Mishawaka’s Heritage Square, Sanford School Road in Elkhart and in St. Joseph, Michigan.
