Authorities in southern Indiana's Lawrence County say a tornado has injured several people east of Bedford.

A dispatcher with the Lawrence County Sheriff's Department says the tornado struck along U.S. 50 east of the city and caused multiple injuries. He says the county is "requesting as much help as possible."

WISH-TV in Indianapolis reports some homes were flattened and 12 people were injured before the storm moved toward the Columbus area, about 40 miles south of Indianapolis.

The National Weather Service in Indianapolis issued a storm report at 8:17 p.m. EST saying an amateur radio operator reported the tornado was about nine miles east of Bedford.

Indiana Department of Homeland Security spokesman John Erickson said the agency had an unconfirmed report of a tornado in eastern Lawrence County.
