A desert rarity has caused disbelief in the Phoenix area.

A winter storm that has stranded travelers in northern Arizona unleashed a snowy mix of precipitation on the edges of Phoenix.

Former Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner tweeted his astonishment at seeing the light flurries, which are a combination of hail and snow, saying he never thought he would see such a sight in Scottsdale.

Farther north, the snow was more substantial.

Snow and ice forced an hours-long closure of the two major thoroughfares in northern Arizona, stranding motorists south of Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon.

A hotline providing automated updates on road closures took in 1.2 million calls in a 12-hour span today.
