Powerful thunderstorms sweeping across Indiana have damaged buildings, toppled trees and cut power to thousands.

The National Weather Service says baseball-sized hail and wind gusts of up to 70 mph were reported in Greensburg. Video from WTHR-TV showed roofs ripped off hangars at the Greensburg airport and a large silo damaged in the community about 50 miles southeast of Indianapolis.

Trees were down across Columbus in Bartholomew County. Duke Energy reported nearly 10,000 residents without power by early Wednesday evening.

Flooding occurred in northern Indiana's Kosciusko (koss-ee-OSS'-koh) County after nearly an inch of rain fell in less than 30 minutes. Scattered structural damage was reported in other communities.

The weather service placed much of the state under a tornado watch until late Wednesday.
