At least 50 people are planning to spend the night at a shelter in a high school in Terre Haute after a winter storm cut off power to thousands in western Indiana's Vigo County.
Officials say 29 people spent the night in Terre Haute North's auxiliary gym Tuesday night and 25 more checked in Wednesday. Some have been without power since Monday night.
Duke Energy's website says about 14,000 homes and businesses in the area were affected Wednesday afternoon.
Vigo County deputy Emergency Management director Keith Holbert says officials have downgraded a local travel advisory and are now recommending that people stay off the roads.
The National Weather Service says about three-quarters of an inch of freezing rain and sleet fell in the Terre Haute area.
