A massive winter storm is expected to blanket the Plains and Midwest with snow and ice early this week.
Freezing rain and snow are in the forecast for much of the nation's midsection starting Monday, and could cause problems during morning commutes in some areas.
Then, heavy snowfall is expected to hit the region Tuesday and Wednesday.
The weather service has issued a blizzard watch for Tuesday and Wednesday for southern Wisconsin, northern Illinois and northwest Indiana that includes the cities of Milwaukee and Chicago. Snowfall totals could reach more than 2 feet in some areas by the time the storm system has moved through the region.
The weather service says the snowfall combined with high winds could create whiteout conditions, particularly on Tuesday night into Wednesday.
