Police in Portage say lightning struck a park where children and adults were playing soccer, seriously injuring one person and sending about a half dozen others to the hospital.

WWMT-TV says the lightning strike happened about 6:45 p.m. Tuesday as a wave of storms passed across Michigan's Lower Peninsula. WOOD-TV says emergency crews took the injured people to Bronson and Borgess hospitals.

A Portage police dispatcher told The Associated Press that more information was not immediately available.

Police say those at the park were involved in a youth soccer program at Westfield Park in the city, which is next to Kalamazoo in southwestern Michigan.

The National Weather Service says the storms have unleashed hail as large as 1 inch in diameter and winds gusting to 50 mph.
