Winter weather has returned to Michigan, with storm warnings across the southern part of the state leading into the Monday morning rush hour and forecasts of up to 8 inches of snow.

The storm system that hit Sunday came after a spell of unseasonally warm weather that melted the towering snowdrifts remaining from storms earlier this month.

The National Weather Service said snow was falling in much of the state Sunday afternoon, and 2.7 inches was already on the ground at Manitou Beach south of Jackson. The heaviest snow forecasts are across a band from Flint through Lapeer to Port Huron.

Farther south, ice and sleet are expected. The warnings end about dawn Monday.

Winds gusting to 45 miles per hour at Flint, Pontiac and Saginaw are making driving risky.
