Winterizing Your Home for Energy Efficiency

As we head into the winter months, many are dreading the high heating bills that come with the cold weather.

We have had a couple of cold snaps already this year, but the heart of winter is still ahead of us.

You may find comfort in knowing that there are some inexpensive and easy things you can do to lower your heating bill.

Angela House is a lot like many of us in Michiana.

She wants her family to be warm and comfortable this winter and she is concerned how much heat will cost her.

She owns an older home, which means it has had more time to settle and develop drafts.

Angela said, "One of my concerns is this door. It's sort of drafty and air comes in from around the sides as well as down at the bottom."

So what can Angela do to save some money?

We called in the experts from Menard's in Mishawaka to help out with some inexpensive and easy to install products.

Menard’s Employee, Danielle Manni, described the process of sealing up windows.

  • First, line up the self-adhesive tape around the molding of the windows.

  • Next, stretch the clear film across the window as snugly as possible, leaving an inch overhang on each.

  • Finally, if there are wrinkles in the film or it is not tight enough, take a blow dryer and smooth out the film as desired.

  • Trim the excess and you are done.

A Home Energy Fair will take place Saturday morning from 9AM to noon at the Boys & Girls Club of South Bend located at 502 E. Sample Street.

There will be demonstrations on how to make your home more efficient, kid’s activities and great giveaways including gas cards and four $100 Nipsco-Therm cards to use towards your heating bill.
