Florida Gov. Charlie Crist is asking the Obama administration to declare Volusia County a major disaster area.

Flooding after six straight days of rain has left water waist-deep in some places around the Daytona Beach area.

An initial survey earlier this week estimated around 1,000 homes and businesses with damages totaling about $55.1 million.

Crist spokeswoman Erin Isaac says the governor on sent a letter to President Barack Obama Sunday asking for the declaration. She says damage assessments are ongoing in other counties and more requests for disaster help could come.

The declaration must be made for the affected areas to get federal cleanup aide.
