Disaster assistance centers open in Lake County

The state of Indiana is teaming up with FEMA and the Red Cross to offer disaster relief to areas hit hardest by last week's flooding.

Three assistance centers are open beginning Thursday in Lake County.

Centers are at the following locations:

Former Maruszczak Appliance store
9450 Calumet Avenue

2750 Central Ave
Lake Station

Ivy Tech Community College
1440 East 35th Avenue

The centers will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday through Tuesday, Sept. 30.

They will be closed Sunday.

Two more centers will open in Porter and LaPorte counties.

Those exact locations will be announced Friday.

Each center will have computers and phones available for flood victims, along with water and clean-up kits.

State agencies, including the Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA), Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV), Indiana State Department of Health, Indiana Department of Insurance, Indiana Department of Homeland Security, Department of Workforce Development and others, will have representatives on site to provide immediate assistance and answer questions for those who have suffered a loss.

Flood victims from all three counties may visit any of the sites.

State support from several other agencies, including housing support, social services, unemployment insurance, insurance information, public health information, and transportation assistance, will also be available.
