Severe storms battered Michiana Monday night, with many counties receiving tornado warning declarations.
Although it appears significant property damage has been avoided, one LaPorte man died after heavy winds caused a tree to fall on his car.
The LaPorte County Coroner told NewsCenter 16 Monday night that a tree fell on a car and killed the driver in a mobile home park.
The tree fell in the Colonial Mobile Home Court at 6236 North County Road 400 West, just north of U.S. 20.
LaPorte Fire and EMS were dispatched to the scene at 9:20 p.m., and discovered 23 year old Timothy Decker severely injured and stuck in the driver's seat of his Ford Escort.
Rescuers were unable to extricate Decker before he died from massive head trauma.
Crews are still unsure if the tree fell due to lightning or wind, but they do say the man was driving at the time it hit.
