A state-run radio station in Myanmar says the death toll from a devastating cyclone has risen dramatically, to nearly 4,000.

Broadcasting from the country's capital, the station says almost 3,000 more people are unaccounted for in a single town in the country's low-lying Irrawaddy River delta.

The government had previously put the number of people killed in Saturday's cyclone at 351.

A U.N. official says the storm has left hundreds of thousands of people homeless and without clean drinking water. Survivors are lining up to buy water and candles, which have doubled in price.
