A pre-winter ice storm has claimed the life of a 16-year-old Washtenaw County high school student. It also has led to the death of a Howard City man.
Sheriff's Commander Dave Egeler tells The Ann Arbor News that Tyler Steffie was a back seat passenger in a car with two other Dexter High School students when the car skidded off a patch of ice and into a tree Tuesday. The others had minor injuries.
An ice and snow-covered road led 58-year-old Allen Smith to lose control of his car, killing him in a two-vehicle crash in Montcalm County. The Grand Rapids Press reports the occupants of the SUV were treated for minor injuries.
About a dozen deaths have been blamed on the storm that has swept through the Plains and the Midwest.
