Officials say the death toll from Tropical Storm Noel has climbed to at least 48 in Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

Heavy rains from Noel's outer bands continue to pound the island of Hispaniola, shared by the two countries. Thousands have fled their homes.

A Dominican emergency services official says almost 12,000 people have been driven from their homes and nearly 3,000 houses have been destroyed. Collapsed bridges and swollen rivers have isolated 36 towns.

The storm has been making its way across Cuba, and forecasters say it's headed toward the Bahamas and is likely to strengthen over the ocean. It could pass close to Florida over the next few days.
