Tropical Storm Noel, which has claimed at least 81 lives, is expected to skirt Florida and batter the Bahamas.

The National Hurricane Center has issued a tropical storm watch for parts of southeast Florida. Noel is moving slowly away from the north coast of Cuba.

The storm generated flooding and mudslides that killed at least 56 people in the Dominican Republican and 24 in Haiti. One person was killed in Jamaica.

For the Atlantic region as a whole, Noel is the second deadliest of the 2007 season. Hurricane Felix, a monster Category 5 storm, killed at least 101 people in early September, mostly along the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua and Honduras.
