Daniels appeals disaster aid denial for northern Indiana

Governor Mitch Daniels is asking federal authorities to reconsider their denial of federal assistance to northern Indiana residents who suffered storm damage this summer.

Daniels sent an eight-page letter to the Federal Emergency Management Agency and President Bush. He noted that storm systems bringing high winds and torrential rain damaged 571 homes and cost local governments more than $10 million when they swept through in August.

He said Lake County also went through some flooding in 2006, and communities will not adequately recover without federal help.

Daniels sent his original request to Bush in September and learned it was denied earlier this month.
