The National Weather Service has confirmed that a tornado struck in southern Elkhart County last night, causing extensive damage in the city of Nappanee.

The storm damaged several businesses and homes, and sent five people to the hospital with minor injuries.

In a neighborhood just south of the city, a house was knocked off its foundation, tree limbs and lumber are spread across the field. The sanctuary of the two-story New Beginnings Assembly of God Church collapsed, with its roof torn off and half the second floor gone.

Hail hit counties in northern, central and southern Indiana.

Trees and power lines were blown down from a storm cell that passed between Lafayette and Indianapolis, causing damage in the towns of Frankfort and Advance.
