Workers looking forward to payday, take heed. A University of Notre Dame economist says people are more likely to die on or shortly after payday.
Professor William Evans says there's an increase in spending after payday, which can include activities like driving places or going to bars, which can increase risk of death. Evans says traffic deaths, heart attacks and increased drug abuse are among the most common causes of an increase in deaths following payday.
The three-year study examined millions of death records in the U.S. in four groups: seniors on Social Security, military personnel, families receiving tax rebate checks in 2001 and recipients of Alaska's Permanent Fund dividends.
The study found increased mortality the week after checks arrived for each group.
