As 2009 draws to a close, The Associated Press has asked editors and news directors across the country what they consider to be the top three news stories of the year.

The annual poll found that the struggling economy and the millions of jobless and distraught Americans topped the list, receiving 61 of 117 votes.

Number two was the inauguration of President Obama, the first African-American U.S. president.

The health care debate in Congress rounded out the top three.

Other stories in the top 10 included swine flu, Michael Jackson's death and the Fort Hood massacre.
