M-140; Watervliet, MI 49098Friday August 24th & Saturday August 25th 2012 mark the dates of the 3rd Annual Janet Kucharski Memorial Volleyball Tournaments & 5K Run/Walk, hosted by Grace Christian School. This event is held in memory of our dear friend and former colleague, Janet Kucharski, who lost her battle with breast cancer in February of 2010. To honor her memory, the monies collected from these events will be donated to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, whose mission is to “save lives by increasing awareness of breast cancer through education and by providing mammograms for those in need.” Donations to this foundation help provide free mammograms for women, who would otherwise be unable to afford this preventative and life-saving screening, and fund educational programs that supply answers to breast cancer patients, survivors, and anyone whose life is touched by breast cancer. In addition to supporting the National Breast Cancer Foundation, a small portion of the proceeds will be donated to fund a $1000 scholarship in memory of Janet Kucharski. This scholarship was enacted to benefit a family of Grace Christian School directly affected by cancer, a long-term illness, or disability by giving them $1000 to assist with their tuition for the upcoming school year.
The weekend will begin on Friday August 24th with a Co-ed volleyball tournament at Grace Christian School, open to anyone in the community interested in participating in this event. During the volleyball tournament, a benefit spaghetti supper will also be served. The event will continue on Saturday as Grace, along with Hartford High School will be hosting a high school varsity volleyball tournament. That Saturday a 5K Run/Walk will also be held at Grace Christian School on a groomed trail through the property surrounding the school. Registration for the race will be on Friday, Aug.24 (4:30-7:30) and on Saturday at 8 am. Race forms may be picked up at Grace Christian School during office hours Monday-Thursday from 9-3 or printed off at http://www.gcspatriots.com and mailed to the school office at 325 N.
