New Facebook feature creates "personalized newspaper"

A new Facebook feature aims to help users organize the information they receive and filter it by topic.

The “interest list” concept was rolled out Thursday and allows users to create or subscribe to topic lists. The lists range from news on the 2012 presidential election to the latest in fashion trends.

“That’s why we say you're creating your own personalized newspaper because you can pick the things that you care about and decide what you want to see,” said Meredith Chin, manager of corporate communications at Facebook.

Though the site already offers pages and subscriptions to public figures, brands and newsmakers, Chin said this feature creates an easier way to access them.

“We've had lists on the site that people can create for their friends, family, people they went to school with,” Chin said. “So, we wanted to sort of extend that to topic and interests that you care about.”

Users can also add lists made by your friends, create some yourself or come across completely new resources.

“It's a really great thing for discovery too,” Chin said. “If a friend of mine creates a list for fashion and they have a bunch of people on it that I didn't know about, now i can keep up with all of them without having to go through maybe a 100 people and like them individually.”

Lists have already been created for a wide-range of subjects. Celebrities are getting in on the new feature as well. Entertainment host Ryan Seacrest has already created lists for up and coming actors and well-known TV stars, according to Chin.
