Several Michigan projects are expected to get more than $45 million to help accelerate the development and deployment of advanced vehicle technologies.

U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu on Wednesday announced that the money was part of more than $175 million being given out over the next three to five years to support 40 projects in 15 states. The aim is to improve the fuel efficiency of future vehicles.

General Motors Co., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler Group LLC are among those expected to get a share of the money.

The announcement came a day ahead of President Barack Obama's planned visit to an advanced battery facility in western Michigan. He was expected to highlight how technology could help automakers reach new fuel efficiency standards announced by his administration.
