A new survey finds that more than half of American adults play video games. And the it isn't just a passing fancy. The study by the Pew Internet and American Life Project finds that one in five adults -- about 20 percent -- play just about every day.

The study suggests that for many adults, video games are mainstream entertainment for the generations that grew up with them. But they are also popular with adults of all ages. For example, close to a-quarter of people 65 and older say they play games, though among adults between the ages of 18 and 29, the percentage is more than 80 percent.

The study indicates many adults play games for the sense of escapism they provide.
