Online retailers are trying to get recession-weary customers to pry open their wallets. And to do that, they are sending loads of e-mails pitching their latest deals.
For example, Ann Taylor has been sending out e-mails advertising deals on knit tops as low as $9.99, while Saks Fifth Avenue is promoting up to 60 percent off women's fashions.
It's unclear whether the e-mails are driving up sales, but they do seem to be driving up frustration among those who get them. One online shopper says he finds the online pitches "annoying" and notes the number of such e-mails are on the rise.
It's expected merchants will be sending more sales notices to customers as the holiday season draws nearer.
