TiVo says it is "extremely pleased" with a ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court. The high court has refused to mess with a 74 million dollar judgment against Dish Network for violating a patent that is held by TiVo. Dish Network had appealed the ruling, but the high court, without comment, refused to consider it.
Back in January, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit agreed with a lower court that digital video recorders distributed by Dish violated TiVo's patent for a DVR that could let viewers watch one program while recording another. Dish was known as EchoStar back when the suit was filed in 2004. The company has said the ruling won't affect its customers because Dish now uses new DVR software that doesn't infringe on the TiVo patent at issue in the court ruling.
