The pledge by Barack Obama's campaign to let his supporters be the "first to know" about his choice of running mate didn't quite work out as it was supposed to. In the end, the Democratic presidential candidate got scooped by the media on his own announcement.
Earlier this month, the Obama campaign said it would clue supporters in as soon as he was ready to announce his choice, which turned out to be Senator Joe Biden.
The text messages began rolling out across the land at 3:02 a.m., Eastern time Saturday when most people were either asleep or headed off to bed. The media had reported on the choice more than two hours earlier, aided by their own reporting and loose-lipped party insiders.
While some were disappointed that they weren't first with the news, there is an upside to the campaign. It has a fresh batch of cell phone numbers and e-mail addresses for the fall campaign. The flurry of interest also drove a record number of people to the Obama campaign Web site.
