Fighting over Scrabble rights on Facebook

It's a high-stakes scrap over Scrabble. In one corner is a knockoff of the game that has become a major attraction on Facebook. In the other corner are the makers of the company that owns the rights to the classic crossword game.

Hasbro is suing the creators of the Scrabulous program. And the suit comes less than two weeks after the release of an authorized version of Scrabble for Facebook. The Hasbro lawsuit says Scrabulous violates its copyright and trademarks.

In a separate move, Hasbro has asked Facebook to block the game. But the site, which isn't named as a defendant in the suit, has refused to block the application. It's waiting until there's a response from the creators of Scrabulous, which has drawn some half-million daily users, despite efforts by Scrabble's owners to end it.
