Authorities trying to break an Internet-based identity theft ring have been able to secure a guilty plea in at least one of the cases.
One of 38 people who have been charged in the ring has copped to federal charges. A Romanian man pleaded guilty in federal court in Bridgeport, Connecticut, to a charge of conspiracy to commit fraud. Authorities say the man was part of a group accused of stealing names, Social Security numbers, credit-card data and other information from Internet users.
Indictment papers say the phishing scam sought to rip off thousands of consumers and hundreds of financial institutions.
