Voter registration going online in some states

You can pay a bill online, buy stamps online, even apply for credit or a mortgage online. You can even apply for a job online. So why can't most people register to vote online? It's a question being asked as we grow into a more technologically savvy society.

Only two states, Arizona and Washington, let you register online. But why the holdup elsewhere? The biggest challenge is a technical issue.

There is no national voter database and until very recently, there weren't even statewide ones. An official with the Election Assistance Commission says voter rolls were kept in county offices, each with its own computer system.

Back in 2002, the Help America Vote Act mandated the creation of state voter databases by 2004.

As of late last year, Electionine.org reported seven states still didn't have a system running. Another problem is that the signatures used to verify voters' identification are usually recorded on paper.
