Hints for clearing out the clutter
  • Start in a small area – just a closet, drawer or corner of a room
  • Don’t begin anything you can’t finish in 20 minutes
  • Decide what needs to be thrown out, what should be put away and what can be donated
  • Write down the items as you put them in your donation bag – then put the bag in the car as soon as it is filled. When you donate the items, clip the list to your tax receipt.
  • When you clear out the clutter, you are rewarded with a stress-free environment – you can find the things you need, without all the clutter in the way

Frequently Asked Questions

How can people who want to help participate?
It’s very simple. Just take some time to collect clothing and household items that you no longer use and donate them to Goodwill. We find many people have items already bagged up that they just haven’t taken the time to drop off. If the item is in good enough condition for you to give it to a friend, then it is likely something that we can sell in our stores. Every donation is tax deductible; and at our Attended Donation Drive-Thrus we provide a receipt for your records. You’ll also receive a 15% Shopping Coupon. So, if you donate regularly to Goodwill, you’ll never have to pay full price in our stores.

Of course we all have clutter that needs to be cleared out – so that’s great. But, what are the other benefits to donating that we might not realize?
Another benefit is that your donations help us move toward becoming a “Green Community” by allowing Goodwill to find another use for your items, instead of throwing them away. At Goodwill, nothing goes to waste – clothing, shoes, purses, belts, eye glasses, cell phones, cardboard, steel, copper, brass and aluminum are recycled. Few people realize that Goodwill is one of the best recyclers in the country, while helping both individuals and communities.

In addition to donating, what else can people do to help Goodwill’s mission?
It’s easy, just shop in our retail stores. The merchandise changes daily and the stores are bright and well organized. The prices can’t be beat - it is a fantastic shopping experience.

Most of us are familiar with Goodwill, but may not realize the scope of this organization. How far reaching is Goodwill?
Goodwill is actually an international organization that was founded more than 100 years ago by Rev. Edgar Helms, a Methodist minister, in Boston. He collected household goods and clothing in the wealthier areas of the city and then trained and hired those who were poor to mend and repair them.

Today, Goodwill is an international organization that provides employment and training services to over 930,000 individuals each year. In fact, Goodwill places someone in a job every 56 seconds of every business day.

Our goal is to improve the economic self-sufficiency of 20 million people and their families by the year 2020. We are North America’s leading nonprofit provider of education, training and career services for people with disadvantages, such as: welfare dependency, illiteracy, lack of education, no work experience, abusive relationships, single parenting and ex offenders.

Locally, Goodwill Industries of Michiana brings that outreach to our community and neighbors who need help getting and keeping jobs.

What type of impact does having a good job make on someone’s life?
It can make all the difference. A person’s self-confidence increases dramatically. They feel better about themselves when they can support their family and see a positive future ahead. Goodwill believes in the power of work. Building better lives is not just a slogan, it’s what we do everyday. We believe that a hand-up is much more important than a hand-out.

What is Goodwill’s Mission?
Our mission is to provide jobs, training and placement services for people with barriers to employment.

How important are donations to fulfilling that mission?
Donations are part of the full cycle at Goodwill. They give our employees work to sort and process them for our Retail Stores. They also provide the wonderful variety we have to sell – so we can offer great selection and bargains in our stores. Donations are the lifeblood of Goodwill. Without them, we cannot fulfill our mission.

Where can we donate on Saturday?
Donations are accepted at our Attended Drive-Thru Donation Centers at our Retail Stores. You can find a complete list of store locations by visiting our website at:

We encourage you to donate at our Drive-Thru Donation Centers, but if it is just not convenient for you to get to one of our stores, there are over 90 Collection Centers throughout Michiana where you can drop off your items.
