Charlie Weis says his top pickup since becoming the head coach at Kansas wasn't another coach or a high school recruit.
It's the marquee quarterback he once recruited to Notre Dame--Dayne Crist.
Weis was back in South Bend on Saturday and chatted with NewsCenter 16 about a number of topics, including being reunited with Crist.
Weis was fired before Crist ever had the chance to become the Notre Dame starting QB. When Brian Kelly arrived, Crist got the chance. But injuries and then just bad luck crippled his career under the Golden Dome.
Now, it's a chance for both to bring glory to each other.
"We get one last chance--we get a do over here," Weis explained. "We get an opportunity for things to turn out well. No one would be happier for Dayne than me."
But Weis he knows others will be cheering on Dayne too because of the type of person that Crist is.
"I think that everyone is pulling for Dayne Crist," Weis continued. "I think the Kansas fans in particular are pulling for him but I think the Notre Dame fans are pulling for him too because he's such a wonderful young man."
"He's gone through some trials and tribulations, physically having a couple of knee [surgeries] and also going through different coaches-- that didn't work out so well for him."
Weis is more than confident than Dayne can get the job done.
Kansas begins fall practice on Thursday.
