Swarbrick on 2012 Irish Schedule: "I'd Fire the A.D."

Most experts say Notre Dame has the toughest schedule in college football coming up in 2012.

What does Jack Swarbrick think?

"I'd fire the A.D.," Swarbrick said with a smile.

Swarbrick is, of course, the A.D. and as the Notre Dame Athletic Director, the man that put together the schedule that features five top 15 opponents including road games at Michigan State, Oklahoma and USC.

"its a tough one," Swarbrick admitted. "We may have missed the balance point this year. The thing I would say to our fans is this is the flip side of being independent. if you're going to be independent be prepared to take advantage of it and you better be prepared to play with anyone in the country."

The Irish will also host Michigan in a night game at Notre Dame Stadium. The other home games include Purdue, Stanford, BYU, Pitt and Wake Forest. The off-site home game is against Miami in Chicago at Soldier Field.

Even the opener against Navy won't be a cupcake when you throw in the factor that the game will be played in Ireland.

Swarbrick says the Irish will always look to schedule tough opponents moving forward and that will be particularly important come in 2014 when the 4-team playoff begins. Swarbrick says strength of schedule will play a major factor in the teams that are selected.

"Regular season college football drives all other college athletics and its the best asset we have," Swarbrick explained. "As we talked about playoff options we always came back to that, how does this affect regular season. One of the ways it affected regular season is to send a message if you want to make a the 4-team playoff, strength of schedule matters because then you will have better regular season games."

"I think you will see it play a huge role in the future of scheduling in football."
