Notre Dame confirms Rees to start; Golson won't play

Notre Dame has confirmed NewsCenter 16's report from earlier today that Tommy Rees will start this afternoon's game against BYU. Notre Dame says Everett Golson is cleared to play, but Brian Kelly told NBC just before kickoff that Golson will not play. Andrew Hendrix will serve as the backup quarterback.

Golson suffered a concussion in last Saturday's game against Stanford and was not cleared to practice until Wednesday. Brian Kelly indicated on Thursday that he would wait until Saturday to determine if Golson was ready to play.

Kelly said at the time, the decision was not performance based but rather about Golson's health. The Irish want to be extra cautious with their rookie quarterback and not overwhelm him as he returns from the concussion. Kelly said that Golson is the long-term starter for the Irish.

Golson was injured on a helmet-to-helmet collision with just minutes left in the game against Stanford and the Irish down 13-10. Rees came in the game and led Notre Dame on a game tying drive. Rees then threw the go ahead touchdown in overtime as the Irish won 20-13 to improve to 6-0 on the season.

Rees also led the Irish on a game winning drive against Purdue in week two and took over for a struggling Golson in the 2nd quarter of the game against Michigan.
