Penn High School grad and Notre Dame center Braxston Cave is out for the season with a left foot injury that will require surgery. Cave will have surgery in the coming days to repair a torn ligament.
"We feel terrible for Braxston," Irish coach Brian Kelly said Tuesday.
Cave had his foot rolled over early in the 2nd quarter against Wake Forest. He walked off with assistance from trainers but did not return in the game.
Mike Golic Jr took over and did an excellent job. Golic will step into the starting position moving forward.
"I have a great deal of confidence in Mike Golic," Kelly said.
Andrew Nuss will back Golic up.
The Irish injury front is certainly expanded. Wide receiver Theo Riddick will miss the game versus Maryland with a hamstring injury, but Kelly says its not as bad as they originally thought.
Robby Toma will move into the starting position at slot receiver.
Linebacker Manti Te'o and defensive lineman Aaron Lynch continue to battle ankle injuries, but Kelly said he's confident they will be ready to go come Saturday.
Kelly also said he felt Ethan Johnson will finally be able to play against Maryland. Johnson has been out since the Purdue game on October 1st with an ankle injury.
Notre Dame and Maryland will kickoff at 7:30 Saturday night at Fedex Field in Landover, Maryland. It's considered a Notre Dame "home" game and will be broadcast right here on Channel 16.
