It won't become official until sometime after 8pm on Sunday night, but the Notre Dame football team is almost certainly headed to Orlando to face Florida State in the Champs Sports Bowl on December 29th at 5:30pm.
Because the Irish are not headed to a BCS game, the Champs Sports Bowl has first dibs on Notre Dame if it wants them. The Champs Sports Bowl can select the Irish once every four years. It passed on ND last year. If they pass on the Irish again this year, they could run the risk of not getting ND at all during the 4-year period if Kelly's boys were to qualify for the BCS each of the next two seasons.
The Irish are competing with the Big East for a spot in the Champs Sports Bowl. The Big East had a 3-way tie for its conference champion between West Virginia, Louisville and Cincinnati. West Virginia should be going to the BCS because it is the highest ranked team of the three in the BCS rankings.
The Champs Sports Bowl has already said it will not select Louisville. That leaves Notre Dame and Cincy. It would be highly unlikely for the Champs Sports Bowl to select the Bearcats over the Irish.
The opponent would be the 3rd selection out of the ACC. Clemson is headed to the Orange Bowl thanks to a 38-10 win over Virginia Tech Saturday night. Virginia Tech (11-2) on the season will likely then go to the Chick-Fil-A Bowl leaving Florida State for the Champs Sports Bowl.
The Irish are 2-4 all-time against the Seminoles. Of course, one of those wins-- the classic in 1993 when #2 Notre Dame beat #1 Florida State.
