Notre Dame athletes throw Christmas party for kids battling cancer

Notre Dame athletes threw a special Christmas party Thursday night.

The Christmas tree was lit up and so were the faces of hundreds of kids from Memorial Hospital's pediatric oncology unit.

Football players were on hand, as was women's basketball star Skylar Diggins.

It's the 17th year that Irish athletes have gathered for this special event.

“It's such an amazing opportunity to just show them how much they mean to us by just coming out here and just having a good time with them to bring a smile to their face means everything,” Said Irish senior linebacker Danny Spond. “Sometimes it means more than a win. It's awesome.”

“A lot of these kids have been through a lot, whether its injury or illness. I think this brightens up their day. Even if it’s for one day or one moment, the smile on some of these kids faces, you'll never forget it,” said Irish Women's hoops star Skylar Diggins. “This is a great time to spend as a close knit student athlete community just doing our job as role models for these young children.”
