Notre Dame quarterback Tommy Rees made an initial appearance before a magistrate and a not guilty plea to four misdemeanor charges was entered on his behalf.

Rees is charged with one count of battery, two counts of resisting law enforcement and one count of illegal consumption of alcohol by a minor. South Bend police say he fled from an off-campus party early May 3 and pepper spray was needed to subdue him.

Police say Rees tried to flee and knocked the wind out of a police officer who caught up to him. Police say linebacker Carlo Calabrese twice told an officer, "My people will get you."

Rees didn't speak during Thursday's court hearing, which lasted less than a minute. Neither Rees nor defense attorney George Horn would comment afterward. Rees is due back in court July 17.

Calabrese didn't make an appearance on a misdemeanor count of intimidation but was instead represented by his attorney. Calabrese is scheduled to be in court June 21.
